ENERGY GLOBE – The world award for sustainability
26th of May 2008 – EU-parliament / Brussels
www.energyglobe.info
European Parliament returns Energy Globe Gala to Brussels!
“I am honored by this great recognition and very pleased that the Energy Globe winners will be honored on this uniquely European stage,” announced the father of the Energy Globe, Mr. Wolfgang Neumann.
After the event’s sensational success last year, the European Parliament decided to host the international Energy Globe television gala again this year.
On Monday, 26 Mai 2008, the Plenary Hall of the European Parliament in Brussels will again open its doors to this international environmental mega-event. Renowned personalities will present awards in the categories Earth, Fire, Air, Water and Youth in the presence of prominent representatives of industry and government.
Europe is raising its profile – not only through the ambitious climate protection goals of the 27 member nations but also as a stage for extraordinary achievement for the environment. This amounts to an appeal to the world: Everyone can do something; everyone should do something; much is already being done.

Explorations in Lake Toplitz

Max-Planck-Institute begins micro-organism research in Lake Toplitz
Vienna, 20th of October 2007 - Starting from next week new scientific research on unique forms of bacteria will start in Lake Toplitz. The expedition will be headed by Professor Hans Fricke from the Max-Planck-Institute Bremen who will be coordinating a group of scientists from Germany and the Netherlands. The microbiological analysis shall be completed within a period of ten days.
Since the eighties Professor Hans Fricke has been on various dives in Lake Toplitz and is an expert on the Lake and its complex ecosystem. His discovery of a new bacterium in connection with the trunks from the NS era found on the bottom of the Lake and filled with fake stirling notes caused a major stir. The discovery of these "duds" further fuelled the decade-old speculations about "Nazi gold".
Even though the official purpose of the diving expedition is the mapping of the small Lake in the Styrian part of the Salzkammergut, just like on innumerable earlier occasions there are hopes to reveal the odd secret of this Alpine Lake which became famous in connection with the NS era.
In the past the launch of the surveying and mapping operations in Lake Toplitz by a US American diving company had been repeatedly postponed. Problems to obtain permits under nature protection legislation and private reasons were cited by Scott Norman, head of the expedition by Global Explorations Company, only last spring.
As Bundesforste (Federal Forests Holding Company), owner of the plots along the shores, had stressed on various occasions for tourism-related reasons mapping operations with sonars can only be carried out in autumn and spring. The reason for which Bundesforste are interested in a full-scale mapping of the Lake: so-called illicit divers keep breaking the peace of Lake Toplitz ignoring all diving bans. Only when all rumours about the treasures from NS times purportedly hidden in Lake Toplitz will be out will it be possible to guarantee the protection of the sensitive ecosystem.

Event Information:
It is our duty and responsibility to make sure that in the future our young people find an environment that is worthy to live. This was the driving force that made Mr. Wolfgang Neumann 7 years ago start the “World Award for Sustainability”, today’s most prestigious and acknowledged environmental award. The ENERGY GLOBE aims at informing the international public about as many sustainable projects as possible, which are reproducible.
World-premiere! For the first time a TV-Show takes place at and is broadcast from the European Parliament in Brussels. Reason for this “miracle”: the ENERGY GLOBE Award. 732 projects from 96 countries were submitted in the categories Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Youth. Under the Chairmanship of Maneka Ghandi, an Indian environmentalist and politician, the international Jury awarded the following projects:
Category Earth: John Maina from Kenya for implementing solar energy ovens for drying vegetables and fruits. Thus local farmers are able to increase their harvest by 50% without harming the environment.
Category Fire: The UNEP Risoe Center and the Risoe National Laboratory Denmark for launching a four-year plan for establishing over 16000 solar homes in India together with Danish support and local Indian funding.
Category Water: Jerry M. Brownstein for developing a very effective waste water treatment, using a special water filter, made of recycled plastics for gaining drinking water from waste water.
Category Air: Reindert Augustijn for inventing small Biogas plants helping to reduce annual CO2 emissions up to 54000 tons and role models for another 150000 plants.
Category Youth: University of Art/Linz for inventing a new solar passive house in South Africa, which is able to provide an indoor temperature level of 20 degrees independently from outdoor temperature using a natural air condition system.
National Award: Goes to the host country Belgium for sensitively changing a historical old private house into an energy saving building.
ENERGY GLOBE Founder Wolfgang Neumann: The awarded projects are excellent role models to the whole world! If we don’t blame others and start taking action, all goals to protect the environment are within reach!

The environmentalist was supported by celebrities from all over the world: Hollywood-star Martin Sheen, author and Waris Dirie, pop singer Robin Gibb, star violinist Nigel Kennedy, the Indian environmentalist Maneka Ganddi and the President of the European Parliament Mr. Hans-Gert Poettering.
